Your Child’s First Visit

A child's first dental visit is a life-changing experience. No one knows a child better than their parents. Please share with us how to make your little ones' visit an enjoyable one. Every child's personality or temperament is different, and we do our best to adapt to every situation. Dr. Abazari and her team have over twenty years of experience with the most up-to-date behavior management techniques.

When discussing the appointment with your child, it is best to take a relaxed approach and let them know you will be there for them to explore and learn together. You may read books about going to the dentist. For example, Curious George Goes to the dentist is one I recommend. If you have a personal history of dental anxiety, it's important not to convey that onto your child before or during the appointment as children are very perceptive to parental anxiety. Always be positive about the visit! For example, you may tell your child that the appointment is to clean their teeth, 'so they become strong like their favorite hero and beautiful like their favorite princess.'

First Examination for Toddlers

Clinical exam to evaluate growth and development

Four Years and Above Dental Visit

We will review medical history and dental history
We will take x-rays of your child's teeth
We will clean and polish teeth
We will check teeth for any cavities and gum disease
Every x-ray will be reviewed with you
An individualized Treatment Plan will be given to you when indicated

Before every child's filling visit, we spend several minutes explaining the procedure to your child.

We will determine the type of preventive care necessary for your child based on recommendations from the American Dental Association and your child’s unique needs. If you have concerns about certain types of treatment, call our office; we will be happy to discuss those with you.

For families in Mountain View, Palo Alto, San Jose, Santa Clara, and Campbell, having a pediatric dentist and orthodontist in the same practice can make dental care much easier.

If your child has braces and develops a cavity, the orthodontic wire may need to be removed before the pediatric dentist can treat the tooth. Your pediatric dentists in Mountain View like to begin seeing children around age one or when their first teeth erupt. While this seems early, there are actually a lot of things we accomplish with early visits to the dentist, including:

Building a friendly rapport with your child
Ensuring they feel comfortable and safe in the dental chair
Beginning to monitor oral development
Discussing home care with parents
Discussing health and nutrition with parents

Your child should continue to visit their pediatric dentist for preventive care every six months after their first visit, just like you do.

As Your Child Grows

We will incorporate teeth cleanings into their preventive appointments as they get older and more acclimated to the dental chair around age three.

Parents need to help with brushing and flossing until around age seven or eight. As molars begin to erupt, our dentists may recommend protective treatments like dental sealants, which are thin plastic coatings we apply to the chewing surfaces of your child's molars to help guard against tooth decay and cavities. They may also suggest fluoride treatments to help build developing teeth and protect against cavities.
