When should my child have their first orthodontic evaluation?

Children should be evaluated for orthodontic treatment around ages 7-8. This is because some kids will benefit from Phase I orthodontic treatment, also known as early orthodontic intervention.

If your child isn't a candidate for early orthodontics, we'll reevaluate their needs around age 12.

What Is Early Orthodontic Intervention?

Our orthodontist recommends early intervention for kids with complex bite issues, such as a severe overbite or underbite. It can also help to alleviate early crowding that may make it difficult for future incoming adult teeth to arrive in the correct positions.

Our orthodontist uses expanders in some cases to create space for adult teeth, and we can take advantage of your child's growth patterns to help correct severe bite concerns.

Phase I orthodontic treatment often makes Phase II quicker and easier, since the focus can solely be on tooth alignment.

Your child may also experience improved chewing function and increased confidence after completing Phase I orthodontic treatment.
